I’ve heard the news, seen the picture, read the reports, and I just don’t understand what the big deal is. Why is it even news, Phelps smoked weed, he didn’t do drugs or dope himself for the races. What I find truly hilarious is the several reports I’ve seen/heard about the IOC listing Marijuana as a “performance enhancing substance”. Now, anyone who has ever felt the effects of marijuana can tell you it is not remotely “performance enhancing”. Four possible things can happen: hungry, happy, horny, and sleepy. Sometimes, even in that order.
What I find even more hilarious is the multiple articles online with experts trying to explain “why he would make such a terrible decision.” What is so terrible about it? Phelps is an amazing athlete, won a massive amount of gold medals and probably wanted some down time after all the limelight. Please remember, he is still a young adult (23 I think) and prone to foolishness (personally, foolishness accounts for fun and entertainment in my life more often than not).
Regardless of its legality on a national scale, I simply do not understand why it matters. In fact, I am more proud that he smoked weed than going out on the town and getting stumbly drunk, possibly hurting someone. Even more so, shouldn’t it be more amazing that he can smoke marijuana and still garner such an amazing wealth of olympic gold medals? What do you think? Post a comment and have a discussion!

I think the controversy for a lot of of people is that there is no controversy.
The IOC accepts his apology, isn’t doing shit.
The sheriff of the locality says if there is evidence that he smoked in his jurisdiction he will bring charges, but it doesn’t seem like he is going to go look.
None of Phelps’ sponsors care very much.
The only controversy in my mind is why Network News is even bringing this up.
