Yesterday, I went to the LGBT Equality March in DC. Essentially, the LBGT community was having a march from 15th street to the Capitol. Upon reaching the Capitol, we got to listen to the ever-so-fabulous Gay Men’s Chorus of DC. They sang about 4 or 5 songs, the most notable being Over The Rainbow. Sadly, there was no dance number. I was really holding out for a dance number. Paul agreed with me. They should’ve had a dance number. Something with jazz hands. LOTS of jazz hands.
Anywho, the march and subsequent speeches were put on in hopes of garnering more attention for their cause: equal rights for every damn person be they gay, straight, transexual, black, jedi, white, blue, sith, green, klingon, vulcan, whatever. However, for a “give us some damn rights” march, it was very… docile. Aside from my favorite chant of the day: “WE’RE HERE! WE’RE QUEER! WE’RE FABULOUS, SO DON’T FUCK WITH US!!!”, it was a pretty laid back event. Not to say this isn’t a good thing, but it just seemed very… complacent. I dunno why, but I expected a lot more glee out of the participants.
The main 2 points that were being argued were the right to marry, and down with the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in our military. Many conservative Christians put down the right for homosexuals to marry because somewhere in the bible it says it’s totally uncool if a man lay down with anything other than a woman. However, the bible also condones rape in many instances. For one such instance, in Deuteronomy, it states: “If within the city a man comes upon a maiden who is betrothed, and has relations with her, you shall bring them both out of the gate of the city and there stone them to death: the girl because she did not cry out for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbors wife.” So, I say we stop using a fantastic work of fiction as our moral code. Homosexuals have just as much right to be married and miserable as all the straight people in the world. At the very least, as non-breeders, they should be able to put all the foster children in this country into good homes. I mean, Jesus had 2 daddies and he turned out okay. Secondly, the military issue. If I’m in a battle, I really dont care about the sexual preference of the person next to me. As long as their weapon is also pointed at the enemy, we’re all good.
