Many of you may be familiar with Ross Rebagliati. You may not be familiar with his name, but more likely with his exploits. Rebagliati was the kid who won the 1998 Gold Medal for snowboarding. The medal was taken away from him because they found pot in his system. This never made any sense to me. I figured if he could win an Olympic Gold Medal while stoned, they should probably give him another metal. Or his picture on the front box of Count Chocula. Something other than take it away! But no, whichever poor drunk bastard runs the board that decides to give out or take away medals stated something along the lines of “marijuana is a performance enhancing drug.” Marijuana is an enhancing drug, yes. Performance enhancing, probably not. Unless there happens to be a VW sized brownie at the end of the race. After much deliberation (and presumably a few bong hits), the Olympic community came to the conclusion that Marijuana is not a performance enhancing drug, and that Ross could have his medal back (which leaves some questions about why the whole Phelps fiasco was so newsworthy).
Anywho, since then, Rebagliati is now seeking the Liberal nomination in a B.C. riding for the next federal election. Yesterday (10/26/09), roughly 24 members of Canada’s Liberal Party showed up at a Penticton law firm to select Rebagliati as their candidate in the next federal election. He will face Conservative incumbent Stockwell Day, the Minister of International Trade, who won the 2008 election with 60% of the vote. Rebagliati ran unopposed and the vice-president of the Liberals Okanagan-Coquihalla riding association, Jodie Taylor, declared him the winner and adjourned the meeting within five minutes. No details as to whether this decision was later rescinded as a result of any weed smoking. Ross Rebagliati is positioning himself as a younger candidate whose star power can help him connect with his peer voters who in recent years have stayed away from the polls. Hopefully he will do his best to not harsh their mellow.“They’ve been completely uninterested in politics and I can’t blame them. I have also been over the years completely disinterested in the process. I haven’t had anybody run in any election that I can remember that I was remotely interested in as an individual rather than as a politician,” said the (stoner) snowboarder.
