BREAKING NEWS: Virginia Legislative Committee Tables Marijuana Decriminalization Proposal
Mr. Hats is disappointed to inform you that members of the Virginia House Courts of Justice, Criminal Subcommittee voted on Wednesday to table further legislative action on House Bill 1134, which sought to reduce criminal penalties for certain marijuana possession and cultivation offenses.
The voice vote came despite testimony from NORML, Virginia NORML, and dozens of other supporters who expressed their support for the bill.
You can watch media coverage of the hearing here.
There still remains a possibility that lawmakers may consider an alternative proposal (classifying minor marijuana possession as a class 3, non-arrestable misdemeanor) later this session.
Contact the members of the House Courts of Justice, Criminal Subcommittee and express your disappointment with their decision via this link: http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?101+sub+H08001
| Tell them: “I am disappointed that this Committee has elected to table House Bill 1134. The goal of HB 1134 was to spare thousands of Virginians from criminal arrest and incarceration, as well as the emotional and financial hardships that follow — including the loss of certain jobs and student loans. The measure would also have allowed the law enforcement and court systems to reallocate resources toward activities that will more effectively target serious criminal behavior and keep the public safe. I support HB 1134 and I will keep in mind your opposition to these common sense reforms in the next election.” |
