New York Senate Democrats want to legalize medical marijuana for the same reason I keep telling my anti-pot friendos it’s a great idea: greenbacks. The legitimization would generate around $15 million in licensing fees to help close the $9 billion budget gap. State Sen. Thomas Duane (D-Manhattan) and Assemblyman Richard Gottfried (D-Manhattan) are in favor of the plan to make it legal for the medically downtrodden to score government sanctioned weed or grow it themselves. The Senate, however, still needs to slap their seal of approval on the idea. Ideals differ greatly from Duane: “it is the right thing to do and there is revenue attached to it,” to Republican Senator Martin Golden: “it’s ludicrous.” Golden and other Republicans say the Democrats’ budget proposal is fraught with one-time-only gimmicks, including raising $700 million via the refinancing of tobacco bonds previously issued in 2003.
